Abstract

978,775. Ionization manometers. GEOPHYSICS CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Nov. 30, 1962 [Dec. 6, 1961], No. 45401/62. Heading H1D. A cold cathode ionization gauge has a metal envelope, a cylindrical anode disposed within the envelope, a cathode concentrically arranged within the anode, and means for applying a unidirectional magnetic field along the anode - cathode axis, wherein the cathode has conical portions which are slanted relatively to the direction of the magnetic field. As shown, the spoolshaped cathode 30 is supported by two axially disposed insulating spheres 40, 42 which are seated on recesses 66, 70 and 36, 41 provided in the envelope and cathode respectively. The anode is similarly supported by insulating spheres which are seated in four holes, e.g. 12, 18 provided in the cylindrical anode. Leads 79, 86 are connected to the cathode and anode respectively. Rings 51, 53 are preferably provided in close proximity to the ends of the cathode and assist to initiate the cold cathode discharge. The envelope may be made of iron of a low permeability, thereby forming part of a magnetic circuit which has a minimum magnetic air gap.
