Abstract
977,888. Couplings and friction clutches. FRANK GUYLEE & SON Ltd. Headings F2C and F2U. [Also in Division B3] A tapping attachment comprises a driving member 10, a driven member 12, and a clutch 24 having adjustable shoes 26 for drivingly connecting the members. Member 10 has a spigot 14 rotatably carried in member 12 by a bearing 16, and tapered flat surfaces 34 which co-operate with shoes 26, so that as the shoes are moved axially the frictional resistance of the lining material 28 on the shoes which engages the bore 30 of member 12, is varied. The shoes are held in engagement with the flats by a spring 38, and they are slidably mounted in a member 36, by screws 44 and T-slots 46. Axial adjustment of member 36 and shoes 26 is effected by a cap 48 screwed on to member 12 at 50. A sliding member 58 is driven by member 12 through four steel balls 64, and a chuck spindle 60 is located in a bore 70 of member 58 by a bush 76. The latter is resilient, and comprises inner and outer metal parts with rubber bonded between them. Member 58 is urged downwardly by a spring 78 which bears against a steel ball 80. In operation, the frictional resistance of clutch 24 is adjusted, and the operator applies pressure to the tool to move member 58 against spring 78, thus providing a degree of float. In a modification, flats 34 are tapered in the opposite direction. In a further modification, the chuck 62 is attached to member 10, and spindle 60 is the driving member.
