Abstract

977,038. Electric cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Aug. 17, 1962, No. 31658/62. Heading H1A. An electric cable is enclosed in a corrugated metal tube with an adherent coating of plastic on its outer surface and an outer plastic sheath bonded to the adherent plastic coating. In the arrangement shown the aluminium strip has a thin polythene layer on its lower surface and is passed between corrugating rollers 33 and then to further rollers 4, 4 which fold it around the cable 2. The core and tube then pass through an extruder 7 which encloses them in an outer polythene sheath 7 bonded to the corrugated layer. The layer on the strip may be applied by pressing a polythene layer to the heated aluminium strip or coating the strip with a solution of polythene and xylene and evaporating the xylene. The ends of the corrugations may be offset so that the sides of the tube do not slide over each other and the corrugations may pass helically round the cable. The other side of the aluminium strip may also be polythene coated.
