Abstract

976,783. Angular displacement transducers. GENERAL PRECISION Inc. Nov. 9, 1962 [Nov. 27, 1961], No. 42493/62. Heading G1N. [Also in Division H1] A transducer for measuring angular displacement utilizing the Hall effect, comprises a cylindrical permanent magnet mounted on a shaft, co-operating with a semi-conductor element, the shapes being such that angular rotation of the permanent magnet produces a linear variation of the Hall voltage output from the semi-conductor element. As shown (Fig. 2), a generally cylindrical permanent magnet rotor 11 with one pole on its inner surface adjacent a shaft 13 on which it is mounted, and the other pole on a spirally shaped outer surface 11c, is supported inside a coaxial housing 15. A semi-conductor crystal 23 is located on the inner wall of the housing, and is supplied with a control circuit to produce a Hall plate voltage in conjunction with the magnetic flux from the rotor 11. Due to the cam shape of the rotor and the corresponding shape of the magnetic field, the Hall voltage from the semi-conductor element 23 varies linearly with angular displacement of the rotor. In another embodiment (Fig. 5), the permanent magnet rotor 43 is a regular cylinder with a wedge shaped outer peripheral surface. The output voltage will vary linearly, or as any other desirec function depending on the manner in which the edge surface of the rotor 43 is varied. In a further embodiment (Fig. 3), the rotor 25 is a regular cylinder diametrically magnetised, and the semi-conductor element 34 is wedge shaped, covering 359 degrees of the inner surface of the housing 29.
