Abstract

To facilitate renewal of carbon dioxide absorbing material, in a closed circuit breathing equipment, the material is held in a replaceable cartridge which is received in a canister forming part of the equipment and having a suitable closure lid to permit insertion of the cartridge. The cartridge comprises a perforated, cylindrical casing 15 having a closed end 15a and a central, perforated tube 14. The absorbent material is packed into the annular space 9, sealed with a rubber annulus 18 and maintained under compression by a spring bearing against a cover plate 19. The cover 19 has a central boss which engages over the end of the tube 14. The cartridge is retained in a casing 12 by an end plate 20, formed in one piece with a T-piece 8 connected to the exhalation tube 7, and which carries a sealing ring 20b. The plate 20 is secured by a bayonet fitting and, by compressing the retaining spring, holds the cartridge against a sealing boss 17. The front end is sealed by an O-ring 8b and thus exhaled air from the tube 7 enters the tube 14, passes out radially through the absorbent material and through the perforations in the wall 15 to the interior of the casing 12 and finally through an aperture 11 to a chamber 2 which encloses a liquid oxygen evaporator 3.
