Abstract
The invention diazopolymethine dyes of formula <FORM:0976055/C4-C5/1> wherein Z is a divalent radical which completes a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring to which a further ring may be anellated, R1 is a hydrogen atom, a C1-C4 alkyl radical, a cyclohexyl, benzyl or phenyl radical, R2 is a C1-C4 alkyl radical or a benzyl radical, X is an anion and the ring A may contain non-ionic substituents. The dyes are prepared (a) by coupling a hydrazone of formula <FORM:0976055/C4-C5/2> wherein Y is a hydrogen atom or an arylsulphonyl radical, or a salt thereof with a compound of formula <FORM:0976055/C4-C5/3> in the presence of an oxidizing or dehydrogenating and optionally alkylating the resultant dye or (b) coupling a diazo compound of an amine of formula <FORM:0976055/C4-C5/4> with a cyanomethylidene compound of the formula shown above and optionally alkylating the resulting dye. The dyes may be used to colour natural or regenerated cellulose, leather, synthetic polyamides, polyurethanes and polyesters and particularly polyacrylonitrile in yellow, red and violet shades. Examples describe the preparation of the dyes and their use in dyeing polyacrylonitrile fibres.
