Abstract

<PICT:0975914/C1/1> A process for sulphonating or sulphating aliphatic alcohols, saturated fatty acids, aliphatic olefins, aryl or alkaryl hydrocarbons, fatty acid alkanolamides, and condensation products of ethylene or propylene oxide with an alkyl phenol, or a fatty acid, alcohol or alkanolamide comprises passing the organic compound as a liquid solution, suspension or slurry and as a free annular jet from a zone of higher pressure through an orifice into a zone of lower pressure, and introducing a gaseous mixture of sulphur trioxide and an inert gas into the centre of said annular jet through a nozzle extending into said zone of lower pressure. Reaction is preferably effected at 0 to 80 DEG C. and with a pressure drop of 5 to 300 p.s.i. Inert gases specified are air, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulphur dioxide, carbon dioxide, or mixtures thereof. As shown in the Figure, a reactor comprises a passage 11 divided by orifice plate 12 into a zone 13 of higher pressure and a zone 14 of lower pressure. Sulphur trioxide mixture is introduced through tube 15 and nozzle 16, and the organic compound is introduced through pipe 18. The orifice 17 is preferably sharp-edged to increase turbulance, this effect being also increased by flow breaker 20 and by the introduction of inert gas into passage 18; flow breaker 20 serves to break up this gas into small bubbles, which expand on passing through the orifice. These flow breakers may comprise helical coils of wire of a metal inert to sulphur trioxide. Reaction product may be recycled through cooler 31. The process and apparatus may be applied to batch-wise or to continuous sulphation or sulphonation. Specific examples relate to the sulphonation of dodecyl benzene and of a mixture of dodecyl benzene and xylene, and to the sulphation of (a) a mixture of lauryl, cetyl and oleyl alcohols and an adduct of ethylene oxide and cetyl and oleyl alcohols, and (b) of an ethylene oxide adduct of tridecyl alcohol.
