Abstract
974,563. Fastenings. YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING CO. July 24, 1963 [Aug. 23, 1962], No. 32386/62. Heading E2A. A fastening for doors comprises a spring- loaded latch bolt 16, a follower 26 which, when moved angularly in one direction from an intermediate position co-operates with the bolt to provide a "dead locked" position and which when angularly moved in the other direction co-operates with the bolt to withdraw the latter, and two operating means, e.g. knobs 24 provided with locks 32, 33, adapted to be mounted on opposite sides of a door, said means having a lost motion connection with the follower 26 whereby the latter can be moved angularly to either of the two positions by either of the operating means, without moving the other means. Knob 20 is mounted on a spindle 20a bearing a cam 21 engageable with feet 17a of the bolt 16 to withdraw the bolt from the keeper 19 by rotation of the knob in either direction, steps 17b being provided to retain the bolt in the withdrawn position. A second cam 22 is mounted on the opposite side of the bolt lath and is movable through spindle 22a by knob 24. Spindle 22a supports the freely movable follower 26 bearing a peg 26a movable so that in one direction the peg 26a engages one of the feet 17a to withdraw the bolt, but in the other direction it engages stops 27 on the bolt lath 17 to prevent its withdrawal; a spring-loaded detent 28 preventing removal of the peg. A bore 29 extends through the follower 26 and is engaged by tongues 30, 31 of the respective locks 32, 33, the cross-section of the bore 29 being such that relative free movement can take place between the follower and the tongues 30, 31. When the peg 26a is in the "dead lock" position as in Fig. 4 the cam 22 can be returned to withdrawal position as in Fig. 3 without moving the follower 26. In operation, when the cam follower 26 is not in the "dead lock" position the bolt can be withdrawn by means of knobs 20, 24. When the follower is in the "dead lock" position the bolt may only be withdrawn by means of either of the key locks 32, 33. The knob 24 may be replaced by a pin tumbler lock, or the inner cylinder lock 32 replaced by a turnbutton.
