Abstract

974,358. Valves. SULZER FRERES S.A. Dec. 14, 1961 [Dec. 14, 1960], No. 44901/61. Heading F2V. The pitting or scoring of valve surfaces in a steam by-pass valve is prevented by providing whirl-producing surfaces 10, Fig. 2, or 10<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, on a prolongation of the closure member or, for valves having little or no prolongation, on the casing or conduit wall or on a replaceable seat ring whereby the fluid flows in an annular formation 12 instead of being directed towards the wall. Both valves close on seats 4, 4<SP>1</SP>, respectively, after initial throttling and the helical grooves in cylindrical plug 7<SP>1</SP> become progressively deeper towards the lower end of the plug.
