Abstract

Cyanuric chloride is produced by reacting chlorine with hydrocyanic acid in tetrachlorethane as reaction medium. The chlorine should be present in stoichiometric excess. The cyanuric chloride may be obtained by cooling and filtering, the filtrate being reused as the reaction medium. The tetrachlorethane may be saturated with cyanuric chloride and may be obtained by concentrating the filtrate from a previous reaction. The chlorine and hydrocyanic acid may be introduced separately into the reaction vessel in solution in the reaction medium. The reaction proceeds at from - 20 DEG C. to 160 DEG C., preferably 15-160 DEG C. Hydrochloric acid produced acts catalytically and the pressure build up of HCl may be used to effect filtration under pressure. The reaction may be carried out continuously by introducing the reactants in solution, withdrawing the reaction mixture from the vessel, filtering, degasifying the filtrate to remove HCl, separating into two parts, dissolving chlorine in one, hydrocyanic acid in the other and reusing in the reaction vessel. Specification 974,228 is referred to.
