Abstract

The selective hydrogenation of alkynes in a hydrocarbon mixture also containing alkadienes is effected by passing a solution of hydrogen in the mixture in an upflow stream through a fixed bed of palladium catalyst. Ambient temperature up to 60 DEG C. is preferred with a pressure below 25 kg./cm.2 abs. The solution is formed by condensing the hydrocarbons in the presence of hydrogen. Gaseous hydrogen may also be present by addition or by reducing the pressure. The catalyst may contain up to 5% wt. palladium on a macroporous support and may also contain Pt, Ni, Co, Cu, Fe, Al, Zn, Cd, Pb, Bi, Hg, Tl or compounds thereof. Mixtures containing butadiene or isoprene in particular may be treated. Specification 866,395 is referred to.
