Abstract
973,548. Feeding webs. INDUSTRIAL OVENS Inc. May 14, 1963 [Oct. 8, 1962], No. 19098/63. Heading B6B. Transverse web guiding apparatus comprises a pair of guide rollers 11, 12 supported as cantilevers and arranged so that one edge part of the web 13 can pass between them. The rollers are carried on a mounting 50 with their axes skew to each other. The mounting 50 has a link mechanism 24, 31 and gear mechanism 45, 46 by which it can be rocked to and fro so that the rollers move about an axis between them from one position in which one roller is above the other, as shown in Fig. 1, to a second position in which they are side by side. The skew of the rollers is such that their fixed ends angularly lead their free ends as they move from their first position, Fig. 1, towards their second position, Fig. 7 (not shown), and their free ends angularly lead their fixed ends as they move back from their second position towards their first position. The mechanisms 24, 31, 45, 46 which are operated by a fluid pressure device 21, reciprocate the mounting 50 in a direction away from and towards the free ends of the rollers 11, 12 as it rocks to move the rollers from the first position to the second position and back again respectively. An edge sensing mechanism, illustrated in more detail in Fig. 15 (not shown) comprises a tube 55 which has a slot 56 supplied with low-pressure air which operates a pneumatic control device which in turn controls the fluid pressure device 21. In a modification, Fig. 14 (not shown), the link mechanism 24, 31 is modified so that the rollers 11, 12 do not rotate about a fixed axis between them whilst moving from their first position to their second position as above, but rotate about an axis which is displaced angularly as they move from their first to their second position. The control means may be replaced by known mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic or electronic control means.
