Abstract
972,834. Rotary pumps. MIRRLEES (ENGINEERS) Ltd. April 5, 1962 [April 5, 1961(2)], Nos. 12149/61 and 12150/61. Heading F1F. [Also in Division B1] A rotary axial flow pump 2, for example of the type having three meshing screws, is mounted, with its drive shaft 12 (Fig. 1) vertical, on a supporting member 1 having a chamber 3 into which the pump discharges, and an outlet 7 from the chamber. The supporting member has a flange 5 by which it may be mounted on an oil tank with the pump lying in a tube 32 (Fig. 3) and strainer 33 which dip into the oil. The flow of oil may be varied by a by-pass valve 27 of the balanced piston type, which is controlled by a hand wheel 31 and which discharges through one of two holes 25, arranged equidistant from the by-pass inlet passage 8 to allow for different positions of the valve, and a pipe 26 which extends below the surface of the oil. The pump may be primed by introducing oil through a connection 34. Air pumped with the oil collects in a dome 4 and passes past the drive shaft gland 11, and through a pipe 16 to a snifter valve (see Division B1).
