Abstract

972,733. Gas-blast switches. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. June 29, 1962 [June 29, 1961], No. 25097/62. Heading H2B. A gas-blast switch having a nozzle fixed contact assembly 6 has a hollow movable contact member 14 with a solid contact end 12 and a piston 20 at its other end which is attached to an operating rod 19. An insulating tube 21 surrounds the moving contact so that compressed gas forced from the top part of the cylinder 17 by the piston during opening movement passes through openings 25, 15 and then through the nozzle contact assembly 6. The insulating arc extinguishing gas which may be any stable halogenous gas is sealed in a metal or insulating container 1 and a number of such interrupter units with or without parallel resistance may be arranged in series or parallel (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown). The fixed contact assembly 6 (Fig. 2) has a number of overlapping contacts 7, 8 which engage each other when the moving contact is removed and which rock on a conducting casing 11 to stress springs 9, 10 between their ends. Fig. 6 shows an arrangement having the insulating tube 21 mounted on a ring 43 biased to the position shown by springs 45, 46 attached to the piston 20. During an opening operation the hooked ends 47 of the tube 21 are held by means 48 and the springs 45, 46 are stressed until an abutment 49 on the contact end 12 strikes the ring 44 and unhooks parts 47, 48. The contacts can be viewed through ports 50, 51. Copper-tungsten arcing contacts 23 (Fig. 1) may be mounted on the fixed contacts and an additional arcing contact may be positioned outside the nozzle (Fig. 5, not shown). The piston 20 may carry an additional annular contact arranged outside the tube 21 and engaging the contact 6 (Fig. 7, not shown).
