The device for dropping loads from aircraft forming the subject of the parent Specification is modified by the provision of releasable securing means for securing the load-carrying platform 1 (Fig. 1) to the aircraft, the releasable securing means including a releasable retaining cord 27 (Figs. 1 and 5) at the front of the platform, a link 29 mounted thereon, and a release system formed by a pivoted hook 15 engaging the link 29, an axially slidable bar 7 carrying at its front end a locking element 14 for restraining the hook 15, and being attached at its rear end by a further releasable coupling to the traction cord 20 (Figs. 1 and 2) connected to an extractor parachute. The further releasable coupling consists of a clip 21 on the cord 20 and a hook 17 hinged on the bar 7. The hook is held in place by wire 30 connecting it to a bridge 19 fixed to the platform. The front of the bar 6 (Fig. 5), as is also described in the parent Specification, similarly carries a hook 11 held by wire 31. In operation, the extractor parachute draws the hook 17 from the bridge 19, shearing the pin or wire 30, and pulls the bar 7 rearwardly before the clip 21 disengages from the hook 17. The rearward movement of the bar 7 frees the hook 15, so that as the platform is drawn rearwardly by the extractor parachute, through the cord 20, the retaining cord 20 disengages from the clip 15, then the retaining cord 24 becomes taut, draws the control bar 6 forwardly relative to the platform, shearing the wire 31, releasing the clip 9 to enable the extractor parachute to pull the main parachute deploying cord 23.
