A knitting machine with selectable ground yarn guides 12 has a plating yarn guide 22 that feeds the plating yarn P to the cylinder 10 at the same relative position to the yarn fed from the guide 12, irrespective of the direction of rotation of the cylinder 10. The guide 22 has a slot 36 whose upper end 38 is above, and whose lower end 40 is below the guide 12, the slot 36 curving inwardly, downwardly and circumferentially away from the guide 12. In Fig. 6 the plating yarn guide 122 is bent from a rod 128. In operation, and with the yarn P passing below the guide 12, for clockwise operation (Fig.2, not shown) the yarn P contacts the end 38 of the slot 36, for anti-clockwise operation (Fig. 3 not shown) the yarn P slides down the slot 36 to contact its bottom 40 to give the same relative feed angle. If it is desired to feed the yarn P from above the guide 12 (Fig. 4, not shown) an adjustable eyelet 50 is raised.
