Abstract

972,179. Verticalsteam boilers. FOSTER WHEELER Ltd. Oct. 3, 1963 [Oct. 3, 1962], No. 37467/62. Heading F4A. A vertical steam boiler comprises a vertical cylindrical shell 10 containing a shroud 22 open at the bottom and closed at its upper end 4 within which heating tubes 12 shown straight but which may follow a helical or other shaped downward path are mounted in clusters 27 between inlet and outlet' manifolds 28 29 connected by pipes 30, 31 to inlet and outlet headers 32, 33. Water to be evaporated is supplied through inlet 14 and feed ring 15 and passes down through the annular downcomer 24 formed between the shell and the shroud and upwards in contact with the heating tubes 12, forming a steam and water mixture which passes up within the shroud, which is restricted immediately above the tube headers before expanding to house a ring of centrifugal separators 25 which return water to the downcomer and pass steam out through the stop of the shell at 16 via driers 26.To allow differential expansion between the tubes 12 and the shell and to reduce leakage problems heating fluid, e.g. steam or another vapour or gas, is supplied through inlets 18 above the shroud to pipes 36 arranged to form expansion loops and which pass downwardly through the top of the shroud near the axis of the shell to inlet headers 32, the heating fluid leaving from the outlet headers through pipes 34 and outlets 20 which pass directly through the shell.
