Abstract

841,656. Heating steam generators by hot gases. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. April 9, 1958 [April 10, 1957(2)], No. 11200/58. Class 123(2) A steam generating unit consists of a cylindrical pressure vessel 12 closed at the top by a dished head 18 having a steam outlet 36 and at the bottom by a dished head 16 divided by a mid-partition 30 into heating fluid inlet and outlet chambers 26, 28. The chambers are separated from the vessel 12 by a tube plate 44 in which are held the tube ends of a bank 42 of nested U- tubes extending upwardly within the vessel, each U-tube connecting the chambers 26, 28 for flow therebetween of the heating fluid, for example the coolant from a nuclear reactor. Enclosing the tube bank to form a steam generating chamber 20 is a cylindrical plate 48 spaced inwardly from the pressure vessel wall to provide an annular downcomer space 50. A conical plate 78 connects the plate 48 to a short cylindrical riser 68 containing vanes 70 which, in operation, impart a spinning movement to the steam-water mixture rising from the chamber 20. Above the riser 68 is a chevron separator 74. A baffle 72 depends from this separator and surrounds the riser 68 to form an annular space through which water separated centrifugally by the vane 70 returns to an annular water storage space 24 between the plate 78 and the vessel wall. Water removed by the chevron separator and by a final separator 75 also returns to this space. Feed-water enters by a ring pipe 38 having holes in its underside to direct the feed-water downwardly into the downcomer space 50.
