Abstract
<PICT:0972048/C6-C7/1> An electrolytic "pen" consists of a reservoir of electrolyte 5 which flows downwards over the surface of an electrically insulated member forming a writing point 4, closely adjacent an electrode member 8 so that it extends within a very short distance above the metal surface 12 to be marked, an electric current flowing from the electrode through the film of electrolyte flowing over the writing point to the metal surface. The electrode is connected to a source of D.C. or A.C. power at 11. The writing point may be of glass fibres through which the electrolyte percolates, or a solid member of ceramic material or sapphire. The gap between the electrode and surface is from 0.0001 to 0.03 inch. In alternative constructions, the writing point may be a tube of insulating material holding a thin metal rod electrode, to give broader writing; or the writing point may be a ball of ceramic material held in a metal seating. A suitable electrolyte consists of ammonium chloride, citric acid, sodium citrate and potassium nitrate.
