Abstract

The invention comprises steroid compounds having the formulae <FORM:0970487/C1/1> wherein X and Y may both be iodine atoms or in which X is a halogen atom and Y is a hydrogen atom and R is an acyl radical derived from an organic acid and processes for the preparation thereof by subjecting 3a -hydroxy-16a -methyl-5b -pregnane-11, 20-dione to selective halogenation to obtain the corresponding 21-halogeno derivative, reacting this compound with an acyloxylating agent to yield a 3a -hydroxy-16a -methyl-21-acyloxy-5b -pregnane-11, 20-dione, oxidizing this compound to obtain a 16a -methyl-21-acyloxy-5b -pregnane-3, 11, 20-trione and dibrominating this compound to produce the corresponding 2a , 4b -dibromo-16a -methyl-21-acyloxy-5b -pregnane - 3, 11, 20-trione. Selective halogenation may be effected with bromine in methanolic solution in the presence of enolising agent or with iodine in the presence of calcium oxide and calcium chloride.
