Apparatus for excavating and cleaning ballast comprises two units optionally coupled together, the first unit removing ballast only from the shoulders of the track and the second unit from under the sleepers, there being means on the first unit for conveying cleaned ballast to means on the second unit for redistributing it on the track when the units are coupled together. As shown, ballast removed from the track shoulders by a plough 7 at each side of a unit 4 is carried on elevators 8 and conveyers 11 and 12 to a hopper 13. A blade 13a is set to direct ballast either to a conveyer 14 or to a vibrating screen 15. Waste ballast from the screen moves along the conveyer 14 and a conveyer 16 to be deposited either in a truck 6 or at the side of the track. Screened ballast is fed into a hopper 17 from which it is directed by a movable blade either to shoots 18 above the track shoulders if the unit 4 is operating alone or to a conveyer 19 if the unit 4 is coupled to a unit 5. Ballast removed from under the sleepers by a scraper 20, the digging depth of which is adjustable by jacks 26, passes successively via an elevator 24, hopper 29 and conveyer 30 to a hopper 31 where a blade 31a directs it either to a conveyer 32 or to a screen 33. Waste from the screen passes via the conveyer 32 to a conveyer 34 which discharges on to the conveyer 14 of unit 4 if the two units are coupled together on to a wagon or track side dump. Screened ballast passes from a hopper 36 to shoots 37 adjustable to discharge only under the sleepers or on the shoulders also. The screened ballast from unit 4 is discharged on to the shoulders from the conveyer 19 through shoots 38.
