Abstract

[Also in Division G1] In an arrangement for the lateral control of the edge of a moving web B, the light-beam from a lamp 1 is alternatively directed on to a photo-cell 4, by a rotating prism 2, through a transparent plastic reference tube 3 or past the edge of the web B which partially obscures the light beam. The pulsating output from the photo-cell is fed through an amplifier 5 to switches 18, 21 alternatively gated by reference and edge signal selecting pulses derived from the output of a photo-cell 9, responsive to a lamp 8, through a phase-splitter 12. The selected reference and edge signal pulses are rectified and filtered in circuits 19, 22 to derive signals which are fed through emitter followers 20, 23 and compared in an error meter 24. The error signal is employed to operate, a servo-mechanism maintaining the edge B in a central or datum position.
