Abstract

The invention comprises anthraquinone dyes of formula <FORM:0969721/C4-C5/1> wherein one Y is an hydroxyl group and the other is an amino group and Z is an unsubstituted phenyl group or a phenyl group substituted by at least one halogen atom. The dyes are prepared by acylating 1,5-dihydroxy-4,8-diamino -anthraquinone or 1,8 - dihydroxy -4,5-diamino-anthraquinone with an equimolar proportion of benzoyl chloride and halogenating the product with for example bromine or sulphuryl chloride if desired. The dyes may be used to colour polyamide, polyvinyl, cellulose acetate and, in particular, polyester fibres in violet to reddish blue shades. Examples describe the preparation of the dyes.
