In the extraction of yarn from a core package composed of a compacted, crimped yarn core wound with a confining tape in helical layers and successive convolutions e.g. the package produced by the machine described in Specification 969,622 or employed in the permanent crimping process described in Specification 969, 625, the package is mounted on a rotatable unwinding spindle and the tape and yarn are separately withdrawn so as to remove the tape and expose the core. Variations in tension of the withdrawn yarn initiate control of the tape advance so as to maintain the yarn at a substantially constant tension. In the operation of the apparatus shown, the package 41 is placed on a spindle 70 subsequent rotation of which is braked by a friction washer. The tape 50 pulled from the package passes through a guide 72, over a tension control device 73 (which smooths out the tape) and is wound on a reel 74 driven by a motor 75: yarn 76 from the core is fed through guides 77, 78, eye 79 and fixed guide 88 and is taken-up by a constant speed winder (not shown). As yarn is pulled from the package, the discharge point recedes into the area held compacted by tape 50 and, on each such occasion throughout the entire unwinding operation, the resulting increased drag on the yarn (as sensed by the eye 79) moves an arm 80 to actuate an arm 84 pivoted at 85 and thus close a micro-switch 86 to cause the motor 75 to pull the tape and thus rotate the package to advance a further quantity of core to the detaching point. The tension at which the yarn is to be maintained is determined by adjustment of weights 87.
