Abstract

969,048. Gas/liquid contact apparatus. COMPAGNIE ELECTRO - MECANIQUE. Nov. 17, 1961 [Dec. 2, 1960], No. 41222/61. Heading B1R. Gas purifying or scrubbing apparatus comprises a rotor 3, Figs. 1 and 3, arranged for high-speed rotation and including an inwardly directed surface of revolution, over which a continuous film of scrubbing liquid is caused to flow continuously so as to be pressed thereagainst by centrifugal force, and means for directing the gas within said surface and constraining said gas to follow a flowpath past at least a substantial portion of said surface in scrubbing contact with the liquid film and so that the gas is prevented from coming into contact with liquid in the form of spray. The liquid circulating means may comprise a lower portion of the rotor surface 3a, Fig. 1, dipping into the liquid 2 such that on highspeed rotation of the rotor the liquid rises up and forms a continuous film over the inner rotor surface. The liquid is finally discharged over the upper end of the surface on to the container wall and flows down into the body of the liquid. An overlying deflector 13 may be provided on the wall of the container. The circulating means may alternatively be provided by pump 24, Fig. 3, arranged to take up fluid from the bottom of the tank and discharge it via pipe 25 on to the inner surface of the rotor 3. The rotor may be driven by an electric motor 7, Fig. 1, by the passage of the gas over an impeller arrangement 18, Fig. 3, attached to the rotor. A high rotary velocity may be imparted to the gas by helical blading 23 in the inlet pipe 21.
