Abstract

968,342. Cylinder heads. RUSTON & HORNSBY Ltd. Jan. 31, 1962 [March 1, 1961], No. 7399/61. Heading F1B. A cylinder head 11 is provided with a separate combustion chamber wall 14 of which a small central area only is rigidly secured to the head 11 by bolts 25, the periphery of the wall 14 being connected with non-rigid sealing means 33 which permit distortion of the plate; valve seat inserts 19, which are rigidly secured to the head 11, are a clearance fit in the wall 14 and sealed by seals 22. The centre of plate 14 is supported by a projection 26 surrounding a fuel injector recess 24 and in Fig. 1 the edge of plate 14 is supported by seals 16, 17, of a material such as copper which permits slight yielding. The seals are clamped between the lever 15 and a projection 18 on the cylinder head having apertures allowing coolant to flow from the head over plate 14 and around the edge thereof into the cylinder jacket. In Fig. 2 the edge of plate 14 rests freely against a projection 29 and is sealed to a rigid sealing ring 31 by a resilient stainless steel sealing ring 33. The plate may be of composite construction, e.g., with steel or cast iron with aluminium, sintered alumina or ceramic bonded thereto on the coolant side, or granular ceramic sandwiched between steel on the coolant side and "Nimovec" (Trade Mark) on the combustion space side. The plate 14 may be slightly dished and may have stress relieving grooves on the combustion space side and cooling fins' on the coolant side.
