The portion of insulating material of a higher dielectric strength than the remainder of the insulation about a conductor is disposed in an equipotential region midway in potential between that of the conductor and the potential outside the insulation. In the embodiments described, the high strength insulation may comprise polycarbonate plastics material with the remainder of the insulation formed of oil impregnated paper or alternatively all of the insulation may be of oil-impregnated paper with the higher dielectric strength region formed by thinner paper layers. Weakly conducting inserts or foils may also be provided in this high strength dielectric region.
