Abstract

1, 4-Cyclohexadiene-1, 4-dicarboxylic acid is made by heating 10 to 30 moles of ethylene glycol with one mole of the compound <FORM:0966835/C1/1> wherein R is an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, at a temperature of from 170 DEG to 250 DEG C., preferably under reflux, and recovering the above product from the reaction mixture. Suitable esters are the dimethyl, diethyl and dipropyl esters of 2, 5-dihydroxy-hexahydro-terephthalic acid. The reaction time varies from 10 to 30 hours or more. Catalysts which may be used if desired are methane sulphonic acid, benzene sulphonic acid, p-toluene sulphonic acid, naphthalene disulphonic acid, phenylphosphonic acid, p-tolylboronic acid or p-toluene sulphonyl chloride.
