Abstract

Di-benzoxazolyl-ethylene compounds of the general formula <FORM:0902058/IV (b)/1> in which A represents a benzene nucleus in which 2 adjacent carbon atoms form part of the oxazole ring and which may be substituted by lower alkyl or alkoxy groups or chlorine atoms, are made by condensing the corresponding o-hydroxyaminobenzene with malic acid in the molar ratio of 2:1 at elevated temperature in the presence of a phosphoric acid of formula Hn + 2PnO3n + 1, in which n>1. Preferably the reaction is carried out at 140-200 DEG C.
