966,663. Seats. PACIFIC SEATING CORPORATION. May 6, 1963, No. 17792/63. Headings A4B and A4J. A chair comprises a unitary seat and back member, means affixed to the member and defining a space 26 therewith, a support for the seat member, and means affixed to the support and disposed within the space and co-operating with the space for guiding the seat member in an upward and backward direction to a tilted position. As shown, the support for the chair 22 comprises a standard 11 carrying rollers 27 and a beam 15 resiliently supported by a leaf spring 28. The chair 22 is attached to the end of the beam 15 and is guided for movement between upright and tilted positions by a strap 23, which is secured to the chair back 24, passing between the rollers 27. When the chair is unoccupied the leaf spring 28 urges-it to its tilted position, Fig. 3. Alternatively the guide and strap means may comprise, Fig. 4, a plate 44 attached to the upper end of a support 41 and two straps 46, 46a. The chair is locked in the upright position by the plate 44 being wedged between ledges 49 in the back of the seat, and the upper ends of the straps 46, 46a. When the plate is dislodged, springs 51 urge the chair to its tilted position. A leaf spring may be affixed to the plate 44 which urges the plate from the ledge 49 so that the chair remains in its tilted position unless occupied.
