Abstract

965,545. Transformers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 29, 1960 [Dec. 4, 1959]. No. 41221/59. Heading H1T. The main insulation 14a, Fig. 2, oil impregnated in use, of oil immersed electrical apparatus, e.g. transformers, having a plurality of conductors 13, is part covered by insulation 14b impervious to liquids which restricts ingress of water to the main insulation, the insulation 14b having a melting point in excess of 150‹ C. and a dielectric constant between 3.0 and 3.5. In coils 12, Fig. 1, the part insulation 14b is wound such that adjacent conductors 13 have their inner insulation 14a exposed at alternate main oil surfaces 16a, 16b. The part insulation may be completely covered by further insulation 14c, impregnated by the oil 15. Alternative arrangements of the part insulation are described (Figs. 3 and 6, not shown). In Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the main insulation is a laminated arrangement of continuous layers separated by discontinuous layers of the impervious insulation, the discontinuities occurring in different positions in adjacent layers. The main and part insulations are preferably of similar permittivity. Materials which may be used for the part insulation include polyethylene terephthalate film, polycarbonate film and irradiated polyethylene film.
