Polypropylene film suitable for biaxial orientation is produced by melt extruding polypropylene containing more than 70% by weight of isotactic polypropylene at an elevated temperature of, for example, about 350‹ to 550‹ F. and at a draw down ratio of at least 7:1 to form a flat film web, having a high degree of melt orientation, rapidly cooling the extruded web contacting it with cooling means, for example, by passing it through a bath of cooling liquid (preferably water) or on to the surface of a chill roll, the surface of the bath liquid or the upper surface of the chill roll being <SP>1</SP>/ 16 to 2 inches from the lips of the extrusion die. After being withdrawn from the quench bath and dried or withdrawn from the chill roll, the film may be longitudinally stretched, e.g. at about 200‹ to 300‹ F. to a stretch ratio of about 1.2: to 1.6:1, and may thereafter be heated while under longitudinal tension to about 250‹ to 300‹ F. The web may then be stretched transversely, e.g. at about 200‹ to 300‹ F., while it is under longitudinal tension, to obtain a stretch ratio of about 6 : 1 to 12 : 1. The thus biaxially oriented polypropylene film is finally cooled to about ambient temperature and collected. The film may be heated to a temperature of, e.g. 300‹ to 350‹ F., for a sufficient period of time, e.g. 3 to 10 seconds, to effect annealing, while it is maintained under longitudinal and transverse tension. The cooled biaxially oriented film may be further stretched longitudinally at about 200‹ to 300‹ F. and a stretch ratio of about 1.3: 1 to 3: 1 to obtain balanced biaxially oriented polypropylene film. The cooled biaxially oriented film may be trimmed to remove film edges which have not been transversely stretched and the trimmed edges may be recycled to the extruder. The web of film may issue from the extrusion die at a thickness of about 2 to 20 mils. which may be 8 to 12 times the final thickness of the film. When the film is quenched by passing it through a bath of liquid, e.g. water, at about 40‹ F., the surface of the liquid must be free from ripples and its surface may be maintained at a distance of # to 1 inch below the die lips.
