Abstract
Polypropylene film is biaxially oriented by a sequential stretching process in which a first stretch is carried out at 155 DEG -168 DEG C., and either the film is not allowed to cool below 130 DEG C. and is then stretched transversely to the first stretch at 155 DEG -168 DEG C. or, if the film is allowed to cool below 130 DEG C., it is stretched transversely at 160 DEG -168 DEG C. if the second stretch ratio is lower than the first, or at 163 DEG -168 DEG C. if the second stretch ratio is greater than or equal to the first stretching ratio. The film may be made by melt extrusion, preferably at above 214 DEG C., followed by quenching. Preferably, the film is not allowed to cool to below 140 DEG C. between the stretching steps and is stretched in both steps at 155 DEG -168 DEG C. Especially, the film is not allowed to cool to below 155 DEG C. Stretching may be so carried out as to produce a balanced biaxially oriented polypropylene film.
