A crankshaft grinding machine in which the crankshaft is held vertically comprises a rotary table 3 having an opening 4 and a clamping device on the table by which a journal 5 may be clamped at a distance from the axis of rotation 6 of the table corresponding to the throw 7, and a grinding device beside the table having a disc 9 journalled in a vertically movable spindle head 10 on a slide rest 11 which is radially adjustable in relation to the rotational axis of the table 3. The clamping device is also radially adjustable to accommodate crankshafts of different throw and to permit grinding of the journals. The vertical movement of the grinding head and the first part of the radial movement of the slide 11 may be effected hydraulically; a mechanical fine adjustment may be used for feed. After grinding the pins or journals above the table the shaft is inverted to grind those of the other half of the shaft. A holding device 14 engages the top end of the work and a crane 12, swing- able about an axis 15, lifts the work from or lowers it into the opening in the table 3. A wire-rope winch 13 is rotated by a shaft 18 in synchronism with the table 3 and the weight of the work is hydraulically counter-balanced by a piston 19 in a cylinder 18 coaxially aligned with the rotational axis 6 of the table. Alternatively a spring-operated counter-balance system may be used. Modifications of the lifting gear are illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), in which a telescopic member is fitted between the end support 14 and the crane frame 12 which is hydraulically operated to raise or lower the work and to counterbalance its weight. The offset corresponding to the crankshaft throw may be provided at the lower end of the telescopic member (Fig. 2) or at the upper end (Fig. 3).
