Abstract

A steady for a roll grinding machine or similar machine tool comprises a lower jaw 2 and a lateral approximately horizontal jaw 3 which is arranged for adjustment on a horizontal axis transverse to the length of the jaw. As described, a workpiece 6 is supported by the jaw 2, 3 in a body 1. Jaw 2 is adjustable radially of the workpiece by rotation of a shaft 7 connected by gearing 8, 9, 10, 11 to a screw-thread 12 in a wedge 13 engaging the jaw. The lateral jaw 3 is slidably adjustable in an arm 21 by rotation of a shaft 14 connected by gearing 16 ... 18 to a screw-thread 19 in the jaw. The arm is rockable about a pivot 20 in the body 1 by movement of a wedge 23 which engages a roller 22 on the arm and is connected by a screw thread 25 and gearing 28 ... 30 to a motor 26. In another embodiment, the wedge 23 and roller 22 are replaced by an eccentric engaging a plate on the arm. The arm and the jaws can be automatically clamped in their adjusted positions. The motor for moving the arm may be controlled by a feeler, contact device or floating centres.
