Abstract

964,495. Drawing. UNITED WIRE & SUPPLY CORPORATION. July 8, 1963 [July 9, 1962], No. 26948/63. Heading B3P. In a tube pointer comprising an open-ended housing, a plurality of pairs of opposed work-engaging jaws and means for simultaneously moving the jaws inwards, the jaws together define an axial work-receiving opening and have a plurality of inter-meshing leaves at their adjacent edges. The apparatus 10 comprises a housing formed of end plates 11 and 12 connected by bars 14, 15, 16 and 17 which extend through the plates 11 and 12 and are joined by head-plates 18 and 19. Four jaws 24, 25, 26, 27 are positioned around the central axis of the housing and each bears on a wedge 34, 35, 36, 37 which runs on a bar 14, 15, 16 or 17. The wedges are attached to a plate 38 which is reciprocated by the piston-rod 22 of an hydraulic cylinder 23 and thus forces the jaws inwards. Axial movement of the wedges is prevented by a plate 20 and they are biased by springs 43 to move outwardly. Each jaw consists of a body 50 with slots 51 out into its workengaging surface 53, and a workstop 60. The slots in jaws 24 and 25 are similarly disposed and the slots in the jaws 26, 27 are positioned so that the edges of the jaws interengage as they move together. The jaws have a tapered entry portion 54a to provide a tapered portion 55 joining the point 67 to the tube 66. In a modification a different folding is produced by varying the shape of the jaws, Fig. 6 (not shown). The stroke of the piston is controlled by a switch in the circuit of a motor driving an hydraulic pump. The switch is operated by a stop member 85 mounted on a rack 86 which is adjusted relative to the body by a pinion gear mounted on a shaft which also carries a graduated dial 88.
