for straightening rods of various sizes, andy it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement and combination of the various parts thereof as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
The principal object of our invention, is, to furnish a rod straightening machine of simple and inexpensive construction, of great durability and strength, positive and highly efficient in operation, as welles, one whichshall be extremely easy to operate and in which the operation thereof and the feeding of rods thereto may be performed by one person only.
Another object is7 the provision of'a machine of the character above referred to, which shall be of such construction and arrangement of its parts, that the operation of straightening rods thereby will be performed by the impact thereon of a movable die or member co-operating with a complemental fixed die or member, as the rods are fed between said dies.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from followingdescription and explanation. l

Referring now more particularly to Figs. 1- and 2` of the drawings, the reference numeral 10` designates the base of the machine, which' may beef any vsuitable size, form and material, but by preference rectangular in shapeand provided on its lower surface with a series of spaced depending ribs 11 for the. purpose of reinforcing said base. Mounted on the upper surface of the base and secured thereto by'means of screw bolts 12,*is an upright guide member which is designated as a whole by the reference nu-' meral 13, and comprises a horizontally disposed base 14v at its lower end fromA which is upwardly extended a pair of spaced parallel guides 15 for co-operation with a portion of the movable or impact die of the machine. 1
The base 14 of the guide member 13 also has upwardly yextended therefrom a number of vertically 'disposed'uprights 16 which terminate at their upper ends on a horizontal line about flush with the upper surface of the stationary die. The upper ends of the guides 15 are united by a transverse portion 17 vfrom which is upwardly extended a rib 18 on the upper' end of which is located or formed `a horizontal top 19 as will be readily understood by reference to Figsl and 2 of 'the drawings. Mounted on the upper surface of the base 10 near the opposite side thereof from the guide 13 is another guide member, which is designated as a whole by the numeral 21 and is T-shaped in cross-section as shown. rl`he guide member 21 has a floor 22 at its lower end to rest on the base 10 to which it is secured by means of screw bolts 23 or otherwise. The upper end of the guide member 21 is provided with a horizontally disposed top 24 which lies flush with the top or portion 19 of the guidemember 13 and together with said portion 19 supports the base plate or lower head plate 25 of a vertical cylinder 26 which may be secured at its lower end to said plate by means of screw bolts 27 extended through suitable openings in an annular fiange 28 on the cyl-.

Between the adj acent-ends of the ,ports 34 and .36, the base 31 of thevalve casing is provided with an exhausty port1-38 which leads from the cavity of said casingto the atmosphere. Slidably mounted inthe cylinder 26 is a piston 47 which has downwardly extended therefrom a piston rod 48 which passes through. a suitable opening' in the base plate 25, whichplate is equipped on its lower surfacey with: a stuffing box 49 which surrounds ther rod 43 and may be `of the usual or .ord-i1-` nary construction. It will be notechy by-reference to Fig. l, that the lowerend-of the inlet channel or port'35 communicates with the "'cav-ityf'of the, cylinder at`a 'slight 'distance above: the lbottom thereof, `and ,that'the below the top thereof. By this arrangement air cushions will be provided at the ends of the cylinder se asvto prevent the piston 47 striking them and thereby causing injury to the same.

The construction and arrangement of the members of these dies are such that the arms 52 of one of them will fit and operate in the spaces between the arms of the other die, so
that in the reciprocation of the piston in the cylinder, the movable die willbe caused to telescope with the fixed die, in which operation it will be understood that the square opening between said dies will be maintained in such form but will be diminished in size according to the distance downwardly that the movable die may be forced.
By placing an imperfect or bent rod longitudinally in the opening between the dies and permitting' it to rest on the adjacent inclined faces of the stationary die and in the recess 56 of the lower insert, it is manifest that .by turning the hand lever45 in the proper direction to permit compressed air or steam to pass from the valve chamber 32 through the ports 3G and 37 into the upper end of the cylinder, the piston 47 and the movable die 51 whichl it carries,

-As the die members will be subjected, mainly, to the wear and st ess incident to the operation of the machine, at the apexes of their angular sockets, we employ the inserts which are by preference made of manganese steel, but may be of any other suitable material, which inserts are detachably mounted on the dies so as Jto-permit them to be removed and replaced if necessary. k n j Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim' as new and desire to secure by yLetters Patent, is-
1. ln a machine of the class described, the combinationwith a iixed die member, of a die member movable with respect thereto, said die members having on their adjacent portions transversely disposed spaced arms, the arms at each side of each die member being alternately disposed and opposed and having their adjacent faces inclined in oppositev directions at angles to one another, and means to reciprocate the movable member.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination' with a fixed die member, of a die member movable with respect thereto, said members being constructed to form eomplemental opposed angular sockets to embrace a rod and to telescope one with the other, an insert seated in each member at the apexof its socket and having an angular recess with its walls co-inciding with the walls of the socket, and means to reciprocate the movable member.
3. In a machine of the class described, the
