Abstract

964,415. Laminates. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Jan. 12, 1961 [Feb. 19, 1960], No. 5893/60. Addition to 865,806. Heading B5N. A layer of high density polythene, or a layer containing dicumyl peroxide of low density polythene or of an elastomeric copolymer of ethylene with another olefin such as propylene, is bonded to a layer of an elastomer comprising a polymer or copolymer of a conjugated diene by use of an interlayer comprising a mixture of high density polythene, an elastomer comprising a polymer or copolymer of a conjugated diene, and dicumyl peroxide, the assembled layers being subjected to heat and pressure sufficient to cross-link the elastomer. The elastomer used for the second layer or in the interlayer may be a composition of natural rubber or a synthetic rubber. In examples: A. Interlayer compositions were made comprising natural rubber (40, 50 or 60 parts), furnace black (20, 25 or 30 parts), high density polythene (60, 50 or 40 parts), and dicumyl peroxide (4 parts); sheets of each of these were placed between sheets of a natural rubber composition and sheets of a composition containing an ethylene/propylene (61%: 39%) copolymer (100 parts), furnace black (50 parts), dicumyl peroxide (4 parts), sulphur (0.4 parts), and the assemblies hot pressed at 153‹ C. for 30 minutes. B. Sheets of high density polythene, or of low density polythene or an elastomeric ethylene/propylene copolymer, the two last being compounded with carbon black, dicumyl peroxide and a small proportion of sulphur, were bonded to sheets of a 75/25 butadiene/styrene copolymer containing conventional compounding ingredients, by interlayers comprising butadiene/styrene copolymer (50 parts), furnace black (25 parts), high density polythene (50 parts) and dicumyl peroxide (3.5 parts). C. Sheets of a cis-1.4-polybutadiene composition were bonded to a sheeted ethylene/propylene composition as in B by an interlayer of polybutadiene (50 parts), furnace black (25 parts), high density polythene (50 parts) and dicumyl peroxide (4.0 parts). D. The first composition of C was replaced by a composition of a butadiene/methyl isopropenyl ketone copolymer and the interlayer by one containing a 75/25 butadiene/styrene copolymer.
