Abstract

<PICT:0963804/C1/1> Refuse is passed continuously to a rotary crusher and ejected tangentially in countercurrent to a stream of air, thereby being separated into heavy non-fermentable material (pieces of glass, earthenware, &c.) and light fermentable material. The fermentable material is allowed to ferment for a period and is then recycled to the rotary crusher with further refuse. The refuse may be moistened with water in the crusher or before or after passage thereto. As shown, iron, paper and bottles are first removed from refuse on a sorting belt 2 and conveyed away by belts 4, 5 and 6. The remaining refuse is conveyed to a pit 7 in a bunker 11 and then conveyed by an elevator 8 to a swing hammer crusher 9 and ejected at a desired angle by a guide plate 10 in countercurrent to a stream of air (not shown). The stream of air may be produced by a blower which draws air in at sorting belt 2 and emits near the rear end of bunker 11. The air may be withdrawn from bunker 11 through a cyclone for the removal of entrained particles. The heavy material is projected to a catch plate 12 and passed out of bunker 11, while the fermentable material falls on to a slowly moving bed of fermenting material on a plate conveyer 13. The fermenting material passes to pit 7 and thence is returned to crusher 9 together with fresh refuse. After sufficient build-up of fermenting material, bunker 11 is emptied by interposing a catch plate 17 between plates 10 and 12 and deflecting the material to a conveyer belt 18.
