Abstract

Part of the lower run of an endless pocket-type conveyer is supported by transverse rods 22 on transversely spaced (one only visible in Fig. 1) endless belts 20. The latter are driven at a slower speed than the conveyer so that the pockets " bunch up." The upper run of the conveyer is driven by a pair (one only visible) of sprockets 13. The lower run is driven by sprockets 16. The two pairs of sprockets 13, 16, normally run in synchronism via selsyn receivers coupled through a gear-box to a single selsyn transmitter. When it is required to increase or decrease the length of the delivery loop (the right-hand vertical loop in Fig. 1), the pairs of sprockets 13, 16 are driven at different speeds. A braking system is applied to a pair of sprockets 15. Guides 26, 27, guide the conveyer on to, and off from, the belts 20. The pockets may be of woven stainless steel wire, nylon, or canvas.
