Abstract

Acrylic and methacrylic esters are prepared by heating an alcohol with not less than 3 carbon atoms, with an excess of an ester of formula CH2=C(X)-COOR where X is methyl or hydrogen and R is an alkyl group with fewer carbon atoms than the alcohol, in the presence of an alkoxy derivative of titanium or zirconium as catalyst, and an organic liquid compound capable of forming a binary azeotrope with the alcohol ROH, but not with the ester produced, as an entraining agent and removing the alcohol and the entraining agent as a binary azeotrope. Alcohols used may be propanol, n-butanol, iso-butanol, 2-ethyl-hexanol, iso-octanol, commercial mixtures of 7-10C. alcohols, and alicyclic and heterocyclic alcohols, and the entrainer may be benzene or cyclohexane. The process may be batch or continuous and an inhibitor such as hydroquinone or methylene blue may be present. Examples describe the preparation of 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, and acrylates of a mixed n-octanol/n-decanol alcohols, and C7-C9 'oxo' alcohols using tetra-butyl titanates as catalyst.
