Abstract

962,782. Electrical transformers. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Jan. 18, 1963 [Feb. 13, 1962], No. 2277/63. Heading H1T. A transformer has first and second windings 410 and 420 (Figs. 6 and 7), comprising insulated turns of conductive strip material, the first winding 410 being made up of first and second winding sections 410A and 410B, at least a portion of which are wound together to provide a predetermined capacitance 432, the inner end of one of the sections (410A) and the outer end of the other (410B) having terminals for connection to a circuit, the other ends being left unconnected, and both ends of the second winding having terminals L401 and L402. The series capacitance so provided may compensate for at least a part of the inductive drop in the supply line as well as the drop in the transformer. The thickness of the conducting path is varied in steps by varying the number of layers of conducting strip according to the current flow in the parts of a winding section. The turns of the second winding 420 are interleaved with the portion of the winding section 410B which is not interleaved with the winding section 410A, hence providing a capacitance 434 between 410B and 420, which may compensate for the reactive voltage drop due to the exciting current. The end of 410B, with which 420 is interleaved, is connected to 420 (e.g. both may be earthed, 492) so as to provide a charging path for the capacitance 434. The second winding 420 may be in two sections, which can be connected in series or parallel, and may have one or more sections formed of conductors other than sheet.
