Abstract

962,739. Railway track ballast. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. July 25, 1962 [Aug. 3, 1961], No. 28233/61. Heading E1G. Railway rails 9 are supported by concrete sleepers 2 extending longitudinally of the rails and embedded in a mixture 6 of mineral aggregates and a bituminous binder, the mixture having a void content of not more than 20%, preferably 2-6%, by volume. Metal strips 3 embedded in the sleepers 2 have metallic mesh members welded there. The bed may be in several layers of varying density, the top layer being the most dense. Adjacent sleepers are connected by metallic mesh welded to metal strips 3 protruding from the sleepers. Laths 4 are removed after the mixture 6 has been laid and the spaces fitted with asphaltic joint filling material. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, the concrete sleepers are replaced by metallic mesh members 2 embedded in a mixture 1 as specified above, chairs supporting rails 3 being bolted to plates 10 embedded below the members 2. In a still further embodiment (not shown) the plates 10 and bolts are moulded in reinforced asphaltic concrete blocks themselves embedded in the bituminous mixture 1. Specification 962,738 is referred to.
