Abstract

<PICT:0962302/C6-C7/1> Cereals undergoing steeping, germination and heating in their conversion to malt, are subjected to a sudden blast of air or other inert gas injected into the processing vessel at such a location and pressure as to elevate and tumble the mass of cereal in the vessel, breaking up any coagulated particles. Cereal 3 on a grid 4 in a processing vessel 1 receives a blast of compressed air from perforations 24 in a pipe supplied from a compressed air reservoir 21. Cereal is admitted to the vessel through an inlet 2 and is discharged at outlet 5; to facilitate discharging, the grid 4 is adapted to be tilted downwardly towards the outlet 5. The vessel is closed by a removable cover 6 of which the peripheral skirt is immersed in a liquid-filled trough 26. Steeping, germination and heating may be effected in the same vessel; for this purpose, there are provided spray nozzles 10 for fresh water, a ventilation line 52, and an air circulation system including air blowers 34, 49, an air cooler 35 and an air heater 48.
