Abstract

961,687. Laminating. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. Sept. 29, 1961 [Oct. 31, 1960], No. 35035/61. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B6] A method of producing a laminated web for use in the manufacture of book covers (see Division B6), comprises the steps of providing a first web and a second web of lesser width than the first web, longitudinally slitting the second web into at least two portions, separating the second web portions and aligning their outer edges, or, the outer edges of the two outer portions, with the longitudinal edges of the first web and securing the second web portions to the first web. Three webs 21, 22, 23 are fed through a cutting station 31 where the side edges of the webs are trimmed by circular cutters. The webs 22, 23 are slit longitudinally to divide the web 22 into two parts 40, 41, and the web 23 into parts 49, 50, and a central narrow strip 51. The web parts 40, 41 and 49, 50 are moved apart by guide plates 71 and 90, to engage side plates 66 and 68, whereby the outer edges of the three webs are aligned. The webs 22, 23 are fed over gluing rollers 77, 78 and 99, 100 respectively, and the three webs other than the strip 51 passed through pressure rollers 111, 112, to secure them together. A guide member is provided on the front wall of the adhesive tank 98, comprising an upstanding yoke having a cross-bar beneath which the strip 51 passes. The webs are guided in their travel with their outer edges aligned, by guide plates 58, 62, 82 and 106, having side flanges 59, 63, 83 and 107, respectively engaging the edges of the web 21 and the web parts. The strip 51 is secured to the web 21 by presser heads 115 and 126 secured to rotatable shafts extending transversely to said strip. The heads are maintained in contact with the strip by a weighted offset arm at one end of each shaft. The lower end of each head is rounded and is recessed to receive the strip 51. The heads bear against tubular members situated beneath the webs. The laminated web is cut into strips of a book length, or multiples thereof, by a rotary cutter 137. The webs are drawn through the machine by feed rollers 132 from supply rolls, Fig. 4A (not shown). The roll of web 22 is unwound in the opposite direction to the other web rolls, so that the curvature of the web 22 counter balances the curvature of webs 21, 23 and thus the laminated web tends to lie flat.
