Application filed February This invention relates to loose leaf binders and more particularly to the back or cover members thereof.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a loose leaf binder back or cover having a new and improved means for con necting the hinged, to the attaching portion of said back or cover member.
Another object of theinvention is a new and improved process of making cover or back members for loose binders. 7
further object of the invention is the provision of new and improved loose leaf binder or cover member that is provided 'with an attaching portion and hinged portions connected together by novel means whereby the finishing. clot-l1 will not be abruptly bent or folded in opening the cover or back members. 4
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a new and improved cover or back member that is cheap to manufacture, easily assembled, neat in appearance, light, durable, and one in which the finish mg or covering member will not readily become chipped, broken or disfigured at the hinge by use. I,
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the fol lowing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of the reinforcing member;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the reinforcing member and finishing cover shown in partly assembled position;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the inner side of the back of a loose leaf binder, shown as completely assembled.
In the manufacture of covers or back members for loose leaf binders and the like it is the common practice to employ a reinforcing member comprising two separate sections on one side of which the finishing member, usually of imitation leather, is attached by glue, paste or the like. The two sections are spaced slightly apart and the portion of the finishing member extending between the two sections of the backor cover member constitutes a hinge for the cover. But this arrangement is objectionable because the assembling of the parts is done by hand, which is not only a slow process but it is inaccurate because of lack of uniformity in the spacing of the sect-1011s by the work- 4, 926, Serial No. 85,821.
men. Furthermore, in this form of con These and various other difficulties and objections have been overcome in the binder member and method of making the same, that will now be described. j
In'the form of the device selected to illustrate one embodiment of the invention, the reference character 10 designates what for convenience of description will be termed a between the sections, and since THE DAVID ramonnoYQ back'member for a loose leaf binder. This backmember comprises a reinforcing member 11 which may be of any suitable material, usually of fiber, in some instances semirigid as cardboard, and in others more or lless flexible, and a finishing member or cover The reinforcing member 11 is weakened along a line adjacent to one of its ends whereby a hinge is formed between the two sections into which the member is divided by said line. As shown, one or more slots 13 are formed in the member 11 adjacent one end thereof, thereby dividing said member into an attaching section 14 and a hinged section 15, the two sections being connected together by one or more connecting portions 16. As shown, a single slot is made and a connecting portion 16 is left at each end of the slot.
The finishing material or cover member 17 is then pasted or otherwise secured on one side of the back and its side edges 18 folded over and pasted on the opposite side of said back, after which the ends 19 and 21 are folded over onto the opposite side of said back member and pasted or glued in posi-' tion. It will be noted that the body of'the cover member and edges 18 and the end 19 assist. in forming the hinge between the attaching and hinged sections of the back. By securing the cover member firmly to both sides of the connecting portions 16 the cover member not only reinforces the hinge connection but also assists in preventingsharp bending of the connecting portions 16, and consequently these connecting portions will continue to function as hinge members almost indefinitely without cracking or chipping the coating; on the finishing member.
hand and renders it possible to assemble the parts by machinery, thus insuring rapidity and accuracy in the process of assembly.
,Whetherthe binders be assembled by hand or by machinery, uniformity in size is in-,
su'red. Furthermore, the use of connecting); strips between "the attaching and hinged section of the reinforcing member, whether the same beg integral therewith or securely attached thereto, forms a hinge between the sections that will prevent sharp bending of thefinishing cloth or cover with the consequent chipping of the coating thereon, therebynot only preserving the appearance of the binder but also extending its life.
It is thought from the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that the construction and operation of my device will be apparent to those SlilllEd 1n the art, and that various changes 111 size,
' shape, proportion and details of construction 'may be inade Without departing :t'noin the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention: a '1. In a binder for leaves, a board comprising an attaching member, a hinged member, strips structurally integral with said memberst'or connecting the same together for holding them in spaced relation, a fiexihie cover extending over the outside of said board and secured thereto, and having .a portion extending from one of said members to the other over the inner side of said strips and secured thereto, for reintorcing the same. i i I a 1 2. A back for a loose leaf binder comprising a reinforcing member including an attaching section and a hinged section spaced therefrom, strips structurally integral with said sections for connecting said sections for forming a hinge theretor, and a flexible finishing cover pasted to one side of both of said sections.
In testimony whereof I aihn my signature.
