Abstract
Water-soluble leuco-sulphuric acid ester salts which, in the form of the free acid, have the formula <FORM:0961351/C4-C5/1> in which each x is hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, primary amino or aroylamino and each y is hydrogen, chlorine or bromine and the -NH2 group is in the 1- or 2-position of the anthracene nucleus and in which at least 6 hydrogen atoms are bound directly to the anthracene nucleus and no water-solubilizing groups other than the leuco-sulphuric acid ester groups are present, are made by reacting a leuco ester salt which, in the form of the free acid, has the formula <FORM:0961351/C4-C5/2> wherein x is hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, aroylamino or phthalimido and y is as above, while at least partially dissolved in at least one compound of the formula A-OH, where A is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or propyl, with at least one compound of the general formula R-NH2, where R is hydrogen, -NH2 or an alkyl radical of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, at a temperature below the boiling point of the compound A-OH. By water-soluble leucosulphuric acid ester salts is meant the salts of sodium, potassium, lithium and triethanolamine. The process may also be effected in the esterification reaction mixture in which the leuco ester salt of the formula II above has been prepared by mixing the esterification mixture with an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate containing the compound of the formula R-NH2.
