Abstract

960,933. Paper-making. CLUPAK Inc. Jan. 22, 1962, No. 2224/62. Headings D2A and D2B. Uncreped extensible paper is glazed by conditioning it to a moisture content of 6 to 12% by weight and then glazing at least one face by moving it in contact with and at the same rate of advance as a heated, smooth, metallic surface through a pressure nip. As shown, a web of paper P passes through a rubber-belt compaction device 11 while at a moisture content of 35%, and then through drying apparatus 12 to reduce its moisture content to 6 to 12%. It is then glazed in the apparatus 10 which comprises a roll 13 with a resilient cover 14, e.g. of natural or synthetic rubber, mounted on bearings 16, and a smooth, heated metallic roll 17 pressed on to the roll 13 by one or more pressure cylinders 18 and driven by a prime mover (not shown). The pressure Pr with which the rolls are pressed together is adjusted to make it great enough to impart an acceptable glaze, but not so great that slippage occurs between the rollers. A second glazing calender may be placed (Fig. 3, not shown) to glaze the other side of the paper. The apparatus may be operated fast enough to be used "on machine" with a high-speed paper machine.
