A grading machine has two pairs of rolls, 1, 2, and 3, 4, the rods being arranged parallel to each other and being rotatable in the same direction, an independent drive being provided for each roll of each pair with provision for the adjustment of the speed of one roll of one pair relatively to the other, the rolls having grooves spaced along their length to provide generally square apertures 19 for the passage of undersize material, and an inclined shoot plate 8 being provided to direct oversize material from the first of the roll-pairs 1, 2 to the second 3, 4. The rolls are mounted on shafts 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A each driven by a motor 13 through reduction gearing 14, the motors 13 being arranged alternately on opposite sides of the machine. The rolls are disposed to give a general inclination through the machine from a material dump plate 7 to a shoot plate 12 for oversize material, the first roll of each pair (i.e. the rolls 1, 3) being of larger diameter than the second roll in each pair, and the shoot plate 8 being disposed to form a well between the two pairs of rolls for accumulation of material from the first pair of rolls 1, 2. The rolls 2, 4, together with their motors 13 are adjustable towards and away from the rolls 1, 3 respectively on slides 16, the shoot plate 8 being in two parts to allow for this, and material passing between the rolls falls down a shoot plate 10 to a conveyer (not shown). Each roll is constructed of elements 20 having V-shaped edges, and notches 21, Fig. 5, are provided in the edges to carry lumps of material either into or out of the nip of each pair of rolls. The rolls 1, 3 are driven through V-belt transmissions 15A so that if a lump of material is jammed by the notches 21 on these rolls between the rolls of a pair then the transmission will take the impact until the lump is gripped by notches 21 on one of the rolls 2, 4 and is thus removed to one of the shoot plates 8, 12. The rolls 2, 4 are driven through chain transmissions 15B.
