Abstract

959,955. Percussive drills. ATLAS COPCO A.B. Feb. 14, 1962 [Feb. 21, 1961], No. 5707/62. Heading B4C. [Also in Division E1] Earth boring equipment comprises a drill 41 and a concentric drill 49 both rotated by rods 9, 27 and non-rotary tubing 71, 73 enclosing the rods and arranged to follow the drills and permit retraction of the drill 41 and the rods through the tubing. The rods are driven by means of an adaptor 1 from a hammer drill 3 having mechanism 4 for rotating the adaptor 1 and movable on a feed bar 61 by chains 63. The tubing is attached to the hammer drill by chain 85 and runs in guides 66 on the feed bar. The adaptor 1 rotates on the tubing head fitting 97 which is axially movable relative to the tubing. Flushing water is supplied to the drill 41 and the rods through bushing 83 and to the space 90 outside the rods by line 14. A non-return valve 88 is interposed in the line 14 so that the fitting 97 may be reciprocated relative to the tubing to cause the flushing water to clear obstructions between the drills. Flushing water leaking from joints in the tubing acts as a lubricant for the tubing. The drill 41 is connected to the rod 27 by an adaptor 33 having splines 46 adapted to rotate the drill 49 which has limited axial movement in the lower part of the tubing. The drills have radial hard metal inserts 42, 50. When, during the drilling of a hole 91, solid rock 69 is encountered, the drill 41, adaptor 33 and the rods are removed from the tubing and the rods and drill 41 are returned to drill a hole 93, the supply of flushing water from the line 14 being discontinued. After completion of the hole the drill 49 and tubing may be withdrawn.
